Chapter 25: Whose Baby
The baby cried again, thin and furious, and two hundred wolves turned their heads toward the sound.
Margo came down the steps with the bundle held high against her shoulder, so every torch could find it.
She stopped at the edge of the ring, a few paces from the Stone.
"Look at her," she said, and her voice shook just enough. "Go on. Look at what the Luna wants to put on trial tonight."
Nobody answered.
Sleet ticked on the white blanket, and the baby wailed under it.
"I lost mine," said Margo. "You all know I did. And three days ago the Moon sent me this one, and I took her in."
A murmur ran around the ring.
"She is a day old in my arms, and the woman kneeling there wants to drag me across that rock in front of her." Margo looked straight at me. "Charge me, Fern. Let them see you do it with her in my hands."
I stayed on my knees.
I saw how well it had been built.
No wolf in that courtyard would accuse a woman holding a newborn in the sleet.
A woman near the front had her hand over her mouth.
Another was already shaking her head at me.
My wolf pressed against my ribs, and I thought: the baby is cold.
The baby was wrapped in one blanket, and Margo had come out in a coat.
"How old is she?" I asked.
"I told you. A day."
"Dessa."
Dessa stepped out of the ring with her satchel.
She looked at the baby's face, and then at the stump of cord showing above the blanket.
"Two days," she said. "Three at most. The cord's been clamped by someone who didn't know how."
