My Alpha Mate Secretly Got My Sister Pregnant novel · Chapter 1 of 48
Chapter 1: Harvest Moon
At the Harvest Moon feast, with her positive test in her pocket, Brynn watches her sister announce she's carrying the Alpha's heir, and when Brynn says she's pregnant too, the pack doctor calls her barren and her father disowns her.
My sister stood up at the Harvest Moon feast with one hand flat on her stomach.
I had a folded lab report in my pocket that said I was pregnant.
I had been touching it all night through my dress.
Two years of trying.
Two years of the pack watching my waist at every full moon.
I had planned to stand at the end of the meal and raise my glass of apple juice and say it out loud.
Lacey stood first.
She tapped her fork on her wine glass and the Redmoor great hall went quiet.
A hundred and forty wolves turned to look at her.
She was twenty-three and pretty in a soft pink dress, and she was blushing.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I know this isn't my night. It's the Luna's feast."
She glanced down the high table at me.
"But I can't keep it in any longer."
Her eyes went to the head of the table.
To my mate.
"I'm carrying the Alpha's heir."
Somebody dropped a spoon.
I laughed.
I actually laughed, because it was Lacey, and Lacey said strange things when she drank.
Then Garrett stood up.
He didn't look at me.
He walked around the table, past my chair, and put his arm around my little sister's waist.
"It's true," he said. "Lacey is ten weeks along. The pup is mine."
The hall broke into noise.
Some of it was gasps.
More of it was cheering.
Garrett's mother clapped her hands together under her pearls.
My father pushed back his chair and stood, red in the face, beaming.
Dean Corwin, Beta of Redmoor, raised his glass at my sister.
"To the heir," he boomed.
"To the heir," the hall roared back.
I looked at my mother.
She was staring at her plate.
I put my hand in my pocket and felt the edge of the paper.
My legs stood me up before I'd decided anything.
"Garrett."
He finally looked at me.
His gray eyes were calm.
He looked at me.
"Sit down, Brynn."
"I'm pregnant."
The noise stopped.
I unfolded the lab report and held it out across the table.
My hand was shaking so hard the paper rattled.
"I had a blood test at the hospital on Thursday. I'm eight weeks. I was going to tell you tonight."
Garrett didn't take it.
Lacey's face crumpled.
"Brynn," she said softly. "Please don't do this. Not tonight."
"Do what?"
"You work at the human hospital." She wiped her eye with one pink nail. "Anyone there could print you a piece of paper. You know that."
"It has my name on it. It has the lab's stamp."
"Then it's somebody's mistake."
The pack doctor cleared his throat at the end of the table.
He was seventy, and he had delivered half the wolves in that room.
He stood up slowly with his napkin still in his hand.
"Alpha," he said. "I examined the Luna in August, at your mother's request."
I stared at him.
He had pressed a cold stethoscope to my back in August and asked how I was sleeping.
That was all he'd done.
"Her wolf is closed," he said. "There's no gentle way to say this. She's barren. She has been since the mating."
A murmur went down the long tables.
Garrett's mother closed her eyes and shook her head, sad and satisfied.
"That's not true," I said. "He listened to my lungs. He didn't examine anything."
Garrett held out his hand.
Not to me.
To Lacey, who put her small hand into it.
"I know you're hurt," he said to me, loud enough for the back of the hall. "But lying to your Alpha in front of the pack is beneath you."
"I'm not lying."
"Two years, Brynn." He shook his head. "Two years of nothing, and the week your sister gives me a pup, you suddenly have a paper."
"Ask the hospital. Call them right now."
"I'm not calling a human lab to argue with my own doctor."
I turned to my father.
My father had carried me on his shoulders at my first full moon.
He had walked me to the Moon Stone when I was mated.
He was looking at Lacey's stomach.
"Dad."
He set his glass down very hard.
The wine slopped over his ring onto the white cloth.
"Don't you call me that."
"Dad, I'm carrying your grandchild."
"My grandchild is right there." He pointed at Lacey with his whole thick arm. "And you're standing in front of the whole pack trying to steal her night with a lie."
"It isn't a lie."
He came around the end of the table.
The wolves near him leaned back.
He stopped so close I could smell the wine on his breath.
"Two years you've shamed this family," he said. "Every moon, the whole pack whispering that the Beta's girl can't give the Alpha a pup."
"So that's what this is."
"This is your sister doing what you couldn't. And you can't even let her have it."
I held out the paper to him.
He knocked it out of my hand.
It slid across the stone floor and under the next table.
"You're no daughter of mine," my father said. "Get out of this hall."
