Chapter 10: The Bad One

I read it three times.

Then I walked out to the far corner of the parking lot and handed it to Wyatt through the truck window.

He read it once.

His face didn't move, but his knuckles went white on the paper.

"Adultery," he said. "With me."

"I'd never spoken to you before Sunday night."

"I know that." He folded the letter. "The Council doesn't."

"When's the hearing?"

"Cold Moon. December twenty-fourth." He handed it back. "Get in. You're shaking."

I didn't have to ask what they were reading.

Lacey had posted it on the town page at midnight.

A photo of her and Garrett at the feast, his hand on her stomach.

Under it, a long post.

Praying for my sister.

She's struggling right now after her marriage ended because of choices she made.

Please don't believe everything she says. She's hurting, and she's saying things about our family that aren't true.

Our baby is due in April. We're so blessed.

Four hundred and twelve likes.

Isn't she the nurse? Who sleeps around with a Strand? Those people.

The waitress came back with the check before I'd touched the eggs.
