Chapter 6: Ironpine

"Not anymore," I said. "He rejected me an hour ago."

Wyatt Strand looked at the blood on my jeans.

"Who ran you off the road?"

"Two of his warriors."

"Why?"

I held on to the duffel bag.

"I don't know yet."

He looked at me for a long moment with those green eyes.

Then he tipped his head back and howled.

It wasn't loud. It was short and low and it went into the trees.

Two minutes later a truck came down the Ironpine road with its lights off.

A lean dark-haired man jumped out of the cab and threw a pair of sweatpants at Wyatt without looking at him.

"Redmoor," the man said, staring at me. "On the bridge."

"She's hurt," Wyatt said, pulling the sweatpants on. "Help me lift her."

"Alpha, that's Rhodes's Luna."

"I know who she is."

They lifted me into the back seat.

I didn't let go of the bag.

The Ironpine pack house was a long log building at the end of a gravel road, with lights on in every window.

The infirmary was at the back.

The healer was a gray-haired woman in her sixties in a flannel nightgown and rubber boots, and she didn't ask me anything at all.

She looked at my jeans and said, "Out, all of you."

Wyatt went out.

His Beta went out after him and shut the door hard.

The healer helped me onto the bed and covered me with a wool blanket.

She pressed her warm hands flat on my belly.

Then she bent down and laid her ear on it, below my navel, and closed her eyes.

I held my breath.

I had done a thousand scans in my head that night. None of them ended well.

"There," the healer said.

"What?"

"Fast. Like a bird in a box." She lifted her head. "Your pup's still in there, girl. Holding on with both fists."
