Chapter 7: Eleven Calls

Bowen stared at Lucan.

Then at me.

"That's a lie."

His voice cracked in the middle.

"That's a lie. I'd have known. The pack would've told me."

"Someone would have called me."

On the floor, Evangeline scrambled up onto her feet.

She brushed off her pink dress. Her eyes were already filling.

"Bowen, she's making it up."

"She's upset because you finally found out about her new male, so she's trying to hurt you. She's always done this."

She put a hand on his arm.

"If Elodie had lost a pup, the whole pack would know. You know that. Nothing happens in that house without us knowing."

"Us," Odile said.

Evangeline flinched.

The old healer folded her arms.

"I stitched that girl up myself. On my table. At two in the morning. Nobody else from Ironwood came."

"Except him."

She nodded at the front door.

It had opened again.

Rhys Kendrick stood there, out of breath, in a flannel shirt and work boots.

Bowen's Beta.

He must have followed the scent from the pack house.

He looked at the room. At Lucan. At the blood on my shirt. At his Alpha, still half-bent from Lucan's voice.

"Rhys," Bowen said. "Tell them."

"Tell them she's lying."

Rhys looked at me.

I'd always liked Rhys. He used to leave coffee on the kitchen table for me on the mornings Helena made me eat there.

He was the only one who ever sat with me.
