Chapter 15: Sweat
Mercy's POV
Verna shut the sauna door on the two of us and said she would open it when she heard one of us say something true.
It was Thursday, four in the afternoon, and the Landing was in two days.
Her husband had built the sauna behind the house forty years ago, out of a Finnish book and a load of cedar.
It was a plank room with two benches, a barrel stove, a bucket of lake water and a wooden dipper.
The Bay's custom is old.
An Alpha sweats before she speaks at the Landing, with her second beside her, so nothing is left hidden in the room.
Nobody had told me the second had to sit in a towel.
I sat on the upper bench in mine, with my braid pinned on top of my head.
Armand sat on the lower bench, a yard away, with his elbows on his knees.
He had not touched me since the ice house.
He had slept in Verna's attic on the other side of the wall, and I had listened to him not come down.
Steam rolled off the stove when I threw the dipper on the rocks.
Sweat ran down his back, along the scar and the ridges of muscle, and into the towel.
