Chapter 14: No
On Sunday I went to church, because my mother went and because I wasn't going to be driven out of my own town.
The Dunmore Lutheran sanctuary smelled of floor wax and wet wool.
The Holloran pack sat in the left-hand pews, as it had for a hundred years.
Every head turned when I came in.
The word had gone round by Saturday noon.
The pack knew about the note, and the guarantor line, and the six weeks.
They looked at me the way people look at a woman who has turned out to be their roof.
Some of them looked ashamed.
I sat beside my mother in the fourth pew and kept my eyes on the hymn board.
Halvard sat three rows up, gray and upright, with Dagny beside him.
Soren sat alone at the end of the pew behind them, with an empty space on each side.
He had on a clean shirt and he had shaved.
He had not looked at me once, and I felt that like a hand on the back of my neck.
When the pastor gave the blessing, the whole church stood and began to talk.
I was bending for my coat when his boots stopped beside the pew.
"Kari," Soren said.
The talk around us dropped.
I stood.
Thirty or forty people were close enough to hear him.
He held his hat in both hands, tall and wrecked and absolutely still.
