Chapter 6: Truce Line

The south border was a gravel road with a white line painted down it.

Twenty Stonebrook wolves stood on one side, and twenty from Redcliff stood on the other.

I stood two steps behind the Alpha's right shoulder with my hand on my belt.

The wind blew from the Redcliff side, and it carried the smell of juniper smoke.

It was the smell of my mother's kitchen.

I breathed through my mouth and kept my face blank.

Dietrich Crane stepped out of the Redcliff line.

He was fifty-four, soft in the middle, with silver hair, a hunting vest, and a ring on every finger.

I had seen him every Sunday of my life, shaking hands and kissing babies.

I had never seen him this close to a fight.

"Tobias," he said warmly. "You look well."

"What do you want, Crane?"

"Justice." Crane spread his hands. "I've come to ask the Moot to hear my complaint. A blood crime, Tobias. You burned my compound with my people in it."

"Your wolves killed my father."

"Allegedly."

"You laughed about it at the Moot."

"I defended myself against an accusation with no proof," Crane said, and he smiled at his advocate, a thin woman holding a leather folder. "A good man would not have answered with fire."

My nails bit my palms.

Tobias took one step forward.

He did not raise his voice at all.

"Where were your warriors the night I came?"

Crane blinked.

"What?"

"Your warriors. Forty-one fighting wolves. I walked into your compound with thirty men and met two sentries and a boy with a shotgun. Where were they?"

"At their posts, naturally."

"Which posts?"

"I don't see how that matters."

"Because I've been wondering," Tobias said, "why a pack with a war on its hands left its hall to the old and the young."
