Chapter 12: The Charter
The Council hall was a round stone room with a hundred seats and a long oak bench at the front.
Every seat was full by noon.
The whole pack had come, because the whole pack had watched.
Twelve elders sat behind the bench in gray robes. The eldest was a bent old woman with white braids, and her voice was the only one that mattered.
Margaret stood alone in the dock with her hands clasped in front of her.
She had put on her pearls. She had put on the signet ring.
She looked straight ahead and did not glance at her son.
Torin read the charges from his folder.
"Attempted poisoning of a Luna and her unborn heir. Conspiracy to stage a false assault. Coercion of a witness. Assault on a witness in custody."
"I deny every word," Margaret said.
"You are denied," said the eldest. "Let the evidence speak."
It did.
The cup, and the lab seal on it. The brooch recording, played in full while the room listened to her low warm voice give orders. Poppy on the stand in a clean gray dress, crying and saying every word, with her cheek still bruised.
The elders did not interrupt once.
When it was over, the eldest looked at Margaret for a long time.
"Margaret Rowland," she said. "You have been in this pack for thirty-four years. You have sat at my table."
Margaret's chin lifted.
"I did it for the pack."
"The pack did not ask."
"The Luna is nobody," Margaret said, and her voice rang in the stone. "She has no family and no name. She was going to give my son a pup with no blood in it. I was protecting the line."
"By killing the heir?"
"By choosing who he came from."
A sound ran through the hall.
I sat in the front row with my hands over my stomach and my son silent in my head.
