Chapter 17: Mate

I pulled on Torin's shirt and went down the hall barefoot.

He came behind me in his jeans, with his hair wrecked and his face set.

"You stay back," I said.

"No."

"Torin."

"I'm your protector. He comes through the door, I'm in the room."

The buzzer rang again.

Under it I heard a sound I had never heard from Caleb in six years.

He was knocking with his fist, over and over, long after anyone would have answered.

I opened the door on the chain.

He stood in the hall in yesterday's suit, unshaven, with red eyes.

He had flowers in his hand. They were dead.

"Joanna," he said.

"You have no business here."

"I know."

"The Council ordered no contact."

"I know. Let me say it once and I'll leave."

His eyes went past me to Torin, to the shirt I was wearing, and to the marks on my neck.

His face crumpled.

"Oh," he said.

I took the chain off.

I wanted him to see me. I wanted it to hurt a little.

"You came for something," I said.

"I came to say I'm sorry."

"You said it in the hall."

"I said it for the room." His voice shook. "I'm saying it for you. Joanna, I can't feel you. I put my hand on my chest every morning and it's empty. I keep reaching for something that isn't there."

"Good," Torin said behind me.

I almost smiled.

Caleb flinched, but he didn't look at him.

"I was a coward," he said. "I had the papers drawn up three weeks before she came. I didn't tell you because I didn't want to watch your face. I let my mother talk me into every other thing, and I let a twenty-two-year-old girl think I'd give her your house."
