Chapter 20: Public Apology
Joanna's POV
Caleb had said his piece to the morning meeting the day after the rail fell.
Hazel made him say it again in full, to the whole pack, at the Winter Assembly.
That was four months later.
In those months he had given up the company, the cars and the house, and he had moved into a room above the pack hall's kitchen.
He drove the supply truck. He carried boxes. Nobody called him Alpha, and he answered to his name.
I sat in the second row of the assembly hall with my hand on a belly that had finally decided to show.
Torin sat on my left, and Hazel stood at the front in her Alpha's gray.
"Thirty weeks," the pup said in my head. "I counted. Does Dad number one know?"
"Hush, baby. Listen."
"I am listening. He looks like he's going to be sick."
He did.
Caleb walked to the middle of the floor in a plain black shirt and stopped in front of the three hundred wolves who had come.
He had a sheet of paper in his hands and he did not look at it.
"My name is Caleb Rowland," he said. "I was your Alpha for eight years."
Nobody spoke.
"I broke my vow to my wife. I did it for a year. I paid for a girl's rent with pack money and told my wife I was at the tower. I let my mother choose the people around me, and I never asked what she did with them."
His voice cracked on the last word.
He kept going.
"When the girl came to my house, I ran to her. I knelt at her feet in front of my wife and forty thousand strangers, and I called my wife a liar."
