Chapter 8: A Home Without My Alpha

Hazel's penthouse had a guest room with a white bed and a window full of city lights.

I sat on the edge of the bed with my coat still on.

Nobody was shouting. Nobody was lying to me. Nobody was calling me a cage.

It was the quietest room I had ever been in, and I began to cry.

I did not make a sound. The tears came down, and I let them, and I held my stomach with both hands.

"Mom," my son said. "It's okay. You can be sad."

"I'm not sad about him," I said in my head.

"Then what?"

"I'm sad about me. I spent three years thinking I was happy."

He was quiet for a while.

"You were happy," he said. "He was just lying. That's different."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

Hazel knocked on the open door.

She had changed into gray sweats, and she was carrying a tray with soup and toast. She set it on the bedside table.

"Eat," she said. "Doctor's orders. Mine."

"Hazel, I don't want to put you out."

"You're not putting me out. I've been waiting two years for a reason to move my brother's wife into my guest room."

I stared at her.

"I've never liked how he talks to you," she said. "I never said anything because you looked happy. I thought that meant it was none of my business."

"You came when I called."

"Of course I came when you called." She sat down on the other side of the bed. "You said you were bored, and you've never once been bored a day in your life. I knew something was wrong."

I picked up the spoon.

"Thank you," I said.

"Eat the soup."

I ate the soup. It was tomato, and it was good, and I finished it.

When I looked up, Hazel was watching me with her chin on her fist.

"What?"

"Nothing. You have a lot of color back."
