Chapter 13: Please
I didn't let him in.
I stepped out onto the step and pulled the door shut behind me.
The kids were asleep upstairs. So was the young couple, and the carpenter, who snored.
Gwenna stayed in the kitchen doorway. I could feel her there, ready.
"Sign the charter," I said.
He nodded too fast. "Yes. Tonight. I'll sign it tonight."
"Good."
"And you keep the bond."
There it was.
I waited for the thought behind it.
[I know you can hear this. So hear it. I'm not testing you. I'm begging.]
He'd aimed it straight at me.
It was the first thought of his in a month that knew where it was going.
"You heard that," he said. "Didn't you."
"I've heard all of it, Lorcan."
He shut his eyes.
"Then you know I mean it."
"I know you mean it tonight."
"I'll sign. I'll send Meriel away. I'll do the Luna rite on the moon, in front of everybody, the way it should have been seven years ago." He was talking faster and faster. "Just don't let it die. That's all. Don't let it die."
