Chapter 21: High Water
"Gwenna!" I yelled up the stairs. "Rope! All of it!"
She was already coming down with her boots unlaced and the big coil from the stable over her shoulder.
"How many?"
"Twelve. Two babies."
She said a word the kids weren't supposed to know and kept running.
Emrys came out onto the porch pulling on his coat.
He looked at the river for a moment.
"It'll take a man off his feet at the middle," he said.
"I know."
"Then the rope has to go across first."
"I know."
He handed me his coat.
He went down the yard at a run and was a wolf before he hit the water.
I had the end of the rope tied around the old stable post by the time he was halfway.
The current took him downstream.
He fought it, head up, the snow coming down on him in the searchlight.
I held my breath until he climbed out on the far bank.
He shifted, grabbed the loose end I'd thrown as far as I could, missed, and waded back in waist-deep for it.
Then he tied it off around the cottonwood on his side and hauled until it sang.
