"Ben," I said.
He set the leash down on the counter.
The anchor was still talking about me. A promising young socialite. A history of instability. A family in shock.
Ben's sister reached up and switched the TV off.
The waiting room was so quiet I could hear the pigeon scratching in its shoebox.
"Back room," Ben said. "Please."
I followed him through the swinging door.
The tabby lifted her head from her heated bed and watched us come in.
Ben leaned against the steel counter and folded his arms.
He didn't look angry.
He looked stunned, his shoulders rigid.
"Tell me," he said.
I didn't tell him.
I took out my phone, found the clip and handed it to him.
"The library camera," I said. "March fifth. All of it. The butler copied it for me that night."
He pressed play.
I didn't watch the screen. I watched his face.
I knew the moment the ashtray hit, because his whole body flinched.
I knew when Bradley reached down for my hair, because his jaw went tight.
