Chapter 20: The Gray Cat

I didn't follow him.

I fed the boarders, because somebody had to.

I turned off the heat lamp, locked the side door with my own key, and took a cab uptown at one in the morning.

From the bottom kennel, as I left, Jenna said only one thing.

"Told you."

Ben didn't call the next day.

Or the day after.

His sister called instead.

"He's here," she said. "He's working. He's doing surgeries. He's not eating, and he's not talking, and he asked me if I believe in anything, which is new."

"What did you tell him?"

"I said I believe in rent." She paused. "What did you do to my brother, knife girl?"

"I told him the truth."

"Huh," she said. "Well. That'll do it."

I didn't go to the clinic on Saturday.

It was the first Saturday I'd missed since March.

I gave him room, and I did the other thing that needed doing.

On Monday morning I called a meeting in the front hall of the house on East 73rd Street.

The butler. The two maids. The cook.

My father's assistant, who'd dropped my grandmother's cat at a vet the day after her funeral and never paid a bill.
