Chapter 16: Two Stamps

Trent and Colin were standing on the sidewalk at the bottom of my ramp, in the rain, with no umbrella between them.

They weren't speaking to each other.

Nathan stood up from the step and put himself half a pace in front of me.

"You don't have to talk to them," he said.

"I know."

"Say the word and they're gone."

"I want to hear it."

Colin held up a clear plastic sleeve with a laptop inside.

Trent held up both his hands, empty.

"Bridget," he said. "I'm sorry. I'm not here for Brett. Brett doesn't know we came."

"You dropped a stamp in my bag."

"Yeah." He wiped his face. "I figured you'd know what to do with it."

"I put it in a drawer."

"Good."

Mom's voice came from the doorway behind me.

"If you're going to stand in the rain and confess, do it on the porch," she said. "I don't want pneumonia on my conscience."

They climbed the ramp and stood under the roof, dripping.

Mom lowered herself into the porch chair with her cane across her knees.

"Go on," she said.

Trent looked at Colin.

"You first," Colin said.

"No, you."

"You officiated."

"You notarized."

"I was told it was a release!"

"I was told it was a program!"

They said it at the same moment and stopped, both red.

"That's two idiots," Mom said. "Who told you?"

"Kendra," they said together.

"Fine. One at a time. You, Trent."

Trent rubbed the back of his neck.

"She gave me a card three weeks before," he said. "It said what to say, in order. 'Do you take this man.' The whole thing. She said it was for the photos, for a gag, and Brett would love it. I read what she wrote."
