Chapter 4: Tomorrow Is Your Turn

Brett found me in the bridal suite with my coat still on.

The planner had set my things by the door.

My wedding dress hung beside them in a white garment bag.

He looked from the bag to me.

"You're not dressed," he said.

"I'm here to pick up my things."

He shut the door behind him.

"Bridget. Not today."

"I told the planner. I told you."

"You said a lot of things when you were angry."

Downstairs a sound technician tested the speakers.

The music stopped, then started again.

Brett reached for my coat collar.

I stepped back.

"We're done," I said.

His face hardened. "Do you know how many people are downstairs?"

"Yes."

"My parents. Your cousins. People who flew in."

"Then you should tell them."

"Tell them what? That you walked out because Kendra gets a few hours?"

The door opened before I could answer.

Kendra came in wearing a white gown with a long train.

Trent walked behind her, carrying her veil.

Colin carried the wooden box.

Kendra stopped when she saw my coat.

"Are you leaving?"

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"I told them I wouldn't do it if it upset you."

Brett turned to her at once. "You haven't done anything wrong."

Colin lifted the last slip from the box.

"One bridal experience," he announced.

Trent grinned. "We made it."

He settled the veil over Kendra's hair.

I watched Brett.

He took a pin from the vanity and fixed one side for her, slowly, with both hands.

It was the careful thing I had always pictured him doing for me.

"What are you telling the guests?" I asked.

"That you're not feeling well and Kendra is standing in for the ceremony," he said. "They think you agreed to it."
