Chapter 15: Who Drew It
The chief engineer took off her reading glasses.
"Bring it here, please."
I walked down to the judges' table.
She pointed to the document camera at the end of the table, the one they'd been using for scoring sheets.
"Put it under there."
I slid Notebook 4 out of the plastic sleeve and laid it open under the lens.
The big screen switched from the frozen chamber to my page.
My pinwheel hinge, in pencil, twelve feet tall.
The same drawing that had been on Courtney's slide ten minutes ago.
The same numbers, the same arrows, the same little smiling rocket.
And one thing her slide didn't have.
The pencil note in the margin, a little smudged.
Four lines of pencil, ending in a date.
The room read it.
I heard it happen, row by row.
The chief engineer looked at the screen, then at the live feed on her tablet.
Arm two, stuck at eleven degrees.
"Miss Fulton," she said. "Your slide showed this drawing. Where's this note?"
Courtney's mouth opened and closed.
"She wrote that last night," she said. "She added it. After Denver. She knew we'd be tested cold."
