Chapter 9: Raise Your Hand
The Homecoming bonfire at Gunflint Bay High School had been built by the senior class out of pallets and a retired rowboat.
It stood forty feet high in the middle of the football field, and four hundred people stood around it in the cold with cider.
I rode in on the back of a hay wagon in a sash that said GRAND MARSHAL.
The deputy walked beside the wagon in his dress uniform, one hand on the rail, smiling for the crowd.
"You could have said no," he told me.
"I could have."
"Why didn't you?"
"I wanted to see where you'd put me," I said.
He put me at the fifty-yard line, in front of the microphone, with the bonfire at my back.
The Booster Club president read a long speech about community, and then he handed the microphone to the deputy, who was on the program as the evening's "honorary host."
The deputy took it with both hands.
"Folks," he said. "Thank you for coming. Gunflint Bay is a family, and families have rules."
He smiled over the crowd.
"This past week some of us have been reminded that those rules protect us. Our fire marshal had to put a stop to some, let's say, informal gatherings at the harbor. I want to say that nobody wishes any ill on anybody who was swept up in it."
He looked at me, kindly.
"Sunny, we love you, and we want you to be well. Why don't you say a word?"
He held out the microphone.
It was a good trap.
If I refused, I looked sulky.
If I spoke, I would have to thank him for the tickets.
I took the microphone anyway.
The crowd was silent except for the crackle of the pallets.
