Chapter 23: Paid
"You left it at the banquet," Donal said.
He held the coat out, and I took it, and my hands wouldn't close on the sleeves.
"Is she gone?" he said.
"She's gone."
"Are you all right?"
"I don't know." I laughed, and it wobbled. "I've waited for that sentence since April, and I thought I'd feel taller."
"You look taller."
"I look barefoot."
He glanced at the grass, and my feet, and put his forehead against mine.
"Take me to your place," I said into the small space between us.
"I don't want to be anywhere there's a door she knocked on."
"Wait here."
I went back through the side door and up the stairs to the room over the garage.
I took my shoes, and then the green ledger from the second drawer, and put it in my bag.
When I came down, my father was in the kitchen doorway, holding two mugs.
He looked at the bag and said nothing.
"I'll be home by morning," I said.
"Tell the tall fella the gutters are still waiting."
Donal's apartment was exactly as I'd left it that morning in May, with the gray blanket and the toast crumbs.
He did not turn on the lamp.
He took my face in both hands in the dark hallway and kissed me, once, slowly.
