Chapter 27: Rhett's POV: Visiting Hours

Rhett's POV

The county jail has a room with a pane of glass and two phones bolted to the wall.

I went in at nine on Friday night with eight strapped ribs and a deputy who looked the other way about my knife.

Rhona didn't know I was there.

I'd told her I was going to see the doctor, and I had, for twenty minutes, and then I had driven here instead.

Morton came in wearing orange, and he sat down and straightened his collar.

He picked up the phone.

I picked up mine.

"You look terrible," he said.

"Tell me what my father signed."

He studied me through the glass for a long time.

"You haven't asked how I'm holding up."

"I know how you're holding up. You're smiling."

"It's a habit." He leaned back. "When your father was dying, he asked me to bring his papers from the office safe. I brought them. He sent me out of the room, and I read them in the hall."

I waited.

"There was a letter from an old woman about her granddaughter. There was a note in your father's hand."

"Say it."

"It said, Rhett's Jo is the Treadwell girl. Marry them for the debt. He'll never go to a woman he's told to love, so don't tell him, and don't tell her he knows."

My hand tightened on the phone until the plastic creaked.

"He knew," I said.

"Eight years," Morton said. "He had her address the week after your accident. He let you ride the county for two years looking for her, and he said nothing."

"Why?"

"Because he thought you hadn't earned her yet." Morton smiled. "He wrote that too. He was a hard man, your father."

I sat there and felt something I'd carried since I was twenty-five go quiet and rearrange itself.

I had been hunting for Jo while my father watched me do it.
