Chapter 16: Mill Spur Splits
Church was called for Monday night, and the clubhouse on Mill Spur Road had never been so full.
Women weren't allowed past the bar on church nights.
Nobody said that to me when I walked in with Jesse.
The man with the gray ponytail held the door, and the bartender looked at the floor.
Forty-one men sat on benches and folding chairs, and the long table at the front had one empty chair at its head.
Dutch's chair.
Nobody had sat in it.
The sheriff had talked to Delaney for three hours on Sunday afternoon, and by supper the whole county knew what she said.
Dutch had not been seen since.
His silver truck was not in the lot, and his phone went to a recording.
Jesse stood at the back wall beside me with his arms folded.
"You don't have to stay there," I said quietly. "They want you up front."
"I know what they want."
"Then go."
"I've stood at the back of this room for eleven years, and I'm not sure how the front works."
I pushed him in the ribs with two fingers.
He went.
He walked down the aisle between the benches, and the room went silent in a wave as he passed.
He didn't sit in Dutch's chair.
He stood beside it with one hand on the back and looked at the men.
"I'm not here to run anything," he said.
"Then why'd you call it?" a big man in the middle row said. His arms were folded too. "Four years you've been gone."
"Because somebody had to, and I'm the only one who's got nothing to lose in this room."
The big man grunted, but he didn't argue.
"Here's what I know," Jesse said. "Dutch forced a girl who worked for him. He threatened her mother's care to keep her quiet. Then he used this club to hide it."
