Chapter 24: Locked Door
In June the lake was blue all the way across.
A man in a pair of old linen trousers sat at the end of the dock reading aloud.
"'He had not meant to stay,'" Ingmar read. "'But the porch light was on.'"
Bartek lay on his back on the planks with his feet in the water and his eyes closed.
The sun was warm on his face.
He had been awake since six, and he had been happy since about seven, which was a rate he was getting used to.
"That is a very bad sentence," Ingmar said, and turned the page.
"It's a good book," Bartek said.
"It is a good book with a bad sentence in it," Ingmar said.
"You said that about the last one."
"The last one had four," Ingmar said.
Bartek opened one eye.
Ingmar sat with his knees drawn up and the paperback propped on them, barefoot, in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He had been a free man for three months.
He had slept until nine most mornings and learned to make an omelet.
He had not once looked at the clock on his phone with the tight, braced look that Bartek had known in November.
The scar through his eyebrow had gone brown with the sun.
"What?" he said, without looking up.
"Nothing," Bartek said.
"You are staring," Ingmar said.
"I'm allowed," Bartek said.
"You are allowed." The corner of his mouth moved. "Continue."
They had been at the lake house since Friday.
