Chapter 21: No Contract
On Monday morning the boardroom smelled of coffee and old leather.
Seven board members sat round the table, with Ingrid at the head.
Lucas sat on a folding chair against the wall in his charcoal suit.
I walked in last, with a folder under my arm and a letter in my pocket.
"Ms. Dombrowski," the man in the gray suit said.
"We understand you asked to address us."
"I did."
"Are you here as Mr. Gorski's wife?"
"I'm not his wife."
A pen stopped scratching somewhere.
"I'm not here to vouch for his heart," I said.
"I'm not qualified, and you wouldn't believe me.
"I'm here to tell you what I'd do if I ran this company, which is my job."
I put the folder on the table and opened it.
"Three things.
"First, an independent audit of every expense Mr. Gorski has signed in eight years, paid for by him.
"Second, a standing rule that no executive spends company money on a personal matter, with a penalty, and his name on the first violation."
"And third?" the man said.
"The Joan Dombrowski Fund."
