Chapter 24: Not Yet, Never
On Sunday morning my husband was burning eggs in my mother's kitchen.
He stood at the stove in a gray T-shirt and bare feet.
The blue bowl sat by his elbow, and the sun came through the window over the sink.
On the windowsill, between a basil plant and a jar of lemon drops, stood a small carved woman with a broom.
I had put her there on Thursday, after the headstone.
"They're going brown," I said from the table.
"They're golden."
"They're a color I've seen on a fire truck."
"You said you'd stop critiquing the eggs."
"I said I'd eat them," I said.
"I never said I'd stop."
He turned with the spatula, and the eyes under that scarred eyebrow crinkled.
He had a smear of butter on his cheekbone.
I loved him so much in that moment that I looked down at my coffee.
Eight days had passed since the stairwell wedding.
We lived in the Evanston house, because the penthouse had sold, and he'd said he never liked the elevator anyway.
