Chapter 23: Mom's Table

The house was in Evanston, on a street of old maples, ten minutes from Brookside Elementary.

It was brick, with a deep porch and a green door, and the porch light was on.

Alasdair stopped the car at the curb on Saturday afternoon and didn't get out.

"I bought it the week after the engagement dinner," he said. "I told myself it was an investment."

"Was it?"

"No." He looked at the green door. "I came by every Sunday and mowed the lawn myself. The neighbors think I'm the gardener."

Elias, in the front seat, kept his eyes politely on the windshield.

I got out and walked up the path.

The door opened onto a hallway that smelled of clean wood and lemon polish.

Alasdair had never lived here. There was no sofa and no television, only a few lamps, a rug, and the sound of my own shoes.

The kitchen was at the back, and in the middle of it stood a table I knew.

It was oak, with a burn mark near one end from a pot my mother had set down too fast.

There were four chairs around it.

One of them had a crack in the seat that my father had glued the summer before he died.

I put my hand flat on the wood.

"You kept it," I said.

"It was in storage with the rest of her things. I couldn't..." He stopped, and began again. "I didn't want anyone else eating at it."

"Alasdair."

"Your room is upstairs. It faces the garden, and it gets the morning sun. I didn't buy anything for it, because I didn't know what you'd want." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'd have bought the wrong things."

"You would have."

"I know."
