Chapter 8: The School Lawn

On Monday at ten to three I stood outside Brookside Elementary with my school keys in my hand.

The principal had asked me to return them in person, and I had asked Elias to come.

He stayed ten feet behind me at the edge of the lawn, with his hands in his pockets and his eyes everywhere.

We hadn't touched since the lake.

I had thought about it for two days.

The parents were gathering for pickup in their usual clumps along the fence.

Nobody spoke to me, and a few of them looked.

Then a black BMW pulled up on the curb, where the sign said no stopping.

Chad got out in a navy suit, with the project manager behind him and the phone already raised.

"Excuse me," Chad said to the whole fence, in the gentle voice. "Could I have one moment? I'm Rochelle Lyle's husband."

The parents turned.

"I wouldn't be here if I weren't worried," he said. "My wife has been through a breakdown. She's said things to people she loves. I'm only asking the school to keep her away from children until she's had help."

He took a letter out of his jacket and held it up for the crowd.

"I've written to the principal. I think everyone here deserves to know."

I walked across the grass toward him.

"Chad."

"Mar." His eyes were soft and sad. "I just want you well."

"Then you won't mind if everyone sees the rest of the video."
