Dario stood up so fast the chair legs scraped.
"Tell them no."
"Don Vitale..."
"Tell them she's under my roof, and nobody summons my..."
"Yes," I said.
They both turned.
"Tell them yes," I said to the man in the doorway. "Noon. I'll come alone."
The man looked at Dario.
Dario looked at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded once, and the man went.
"You don't know what that room is," Dario said.
"I grew up in a house with one."
"This one has five chairs. One of them is mine, and tomorrow I can't sit in it for you. I can only sit in it."
"Then sit in it."
He put both hands flat on the table and looked at them.
"If they tell you to go back to Palermo and disappear," he said, "they'll mean it."
"I know."
"I'll go with you."
"Then I'd lose you your chair."
At a quarter to twelve the next day Dario's man drove me to Bensonhurst.
The meeting was in the back of a bakery that had been closed on Sundays for sixty years.
The front window was full of wedding cakes under dust covers.
