"Object to what?" I said. "Me?"

"To him." He nodded at Dario. "To this. To you marrying a man because of a rule some old men made up."

"You laughed at the rule."

"I know I did."

"You called it a village fairy tale. You asked if I was going to be sold for a goat."

He flinched.

"I know what I said, Giulia. I've been hearing it every night."

"The cathedral is open to anyone," I said. "I can't stop you buying a ticket."

"That's all I'm asking."

"You're not asking. You never ask." I shook my head. "Enjoy economy, Brent."

I walked back to the plane.

Dario fell in beside me.

"You're letting him come," he said.

"I want him to see it."

My father met us on the tarmac in Palermo.

This time he didn't wait at the bottom of the stairs.

He came up two of them and took my face in his hands, in front of all his men.

"Three days," he said. "Then you're a wife."

"Four," I said. "If you count today."

"I don't count today. Today you're still mine."

The villa was full of women.
