Chapter 8: Rule Two

The drunk man's hand was around my wrist, and my back was against a concrete wall.

"Rocco says you're nobody," he slurred. "Rocco says nobody will miss a cleaning girl."

His breath smelled of whiskey.

I had one hand free, and I used it to slap him.

He slammed my wrist into the wall until my fingers went numb.

"Let go!"

I kicked his shin and I heard him grunt.

I thought of the baby.

I thought of nothing else.

Then the steel door at the end of the corridor flew off its hinges.

Dario came through it at a run.

He did not shout.

He took the man by the collar and put him through the wall of the loading dock, and the plaster came down in a white cloud.

The man tried to swing, and Dario broke his arm.

I heard it.

Three guards ran in behind him, and none of them dared touch either of them.

Dario hit him again.

And again.

"Dario!" I screamed.

He did not hear me.

His face was white, and his hands were red, and his eyes were somewhere I could not follow.

I grabbed his arm with both hands.

"Dario. Enough. Look at me."

The fist stopped an inch above the man's face.

He turned his head, and for a moment he did not know me.

Then he saw my wrist, already swelling red, and his whole face changed.

He dropped the man onto the concrete.

"Take him out the front," he told the guards, loud enough for the cleaning crew gathered at the corridor mouth. "Through the main floor. Tell every table who sent him. Tell them whose wife he put his hands on."

Dee was standing at the end of the corridor with her tray in both hands and her mouth open.
