Gran's dinner was set for six, on the Saturday that should have been Chelsea's wedding.
I put the leaves in the table myself and counted chairs twice.
Twenty-two houses, thirty-one people, and the chair at the end that was Gran's, which nobody took.
The bus driver carved.
The barber brought a bottle and a toast he had written on his hand.
The widow from 14 stood over the stove and told the Army kid what was wrong with his gravy.
"It's a dinner," she said, when I asked where the dishes would go.
"The dishes go to the man who signed for them."
"He's at a motel on Delaware."
"Then it's time somebody went and read him the terms," the widow said.
"Your grandmother wrote that clause at my kitchen table in March, in pencil, because she wanted somebody to stay on this street who would stay."
"She told me it was a fence, and she was right, and she didn't count on Chelsea's ring."
The knock came during the pie.
It was a small, wet, uncertain knock, and I knew it before I opened the door.
Chelsea stood on the porch in a gray coat, with her extensions pulled back in an elastic and her face scrubbed bare.
She held a cardboard box of wedding napkins, cream, with gold edges.
"I didn't know what to do with them," she said.
