Chapter 4: The Wolf Tower

That evening the Elders held the renewal rites in the Great Hall, and they brought the wolf up from the dungeon to be looked at.

Two hundred courtiers lined the walls.

Ronan walked in with chains on his wrists and ankles and a guard at each elbow, and he held his head.

In the lamplight he was a good deal bigger than I had imagined.

Dark red-brown hair, a nose that had been broken and set badly, and a gaze that went around the hall once and stopped on me.

Something in my stomach turned over.

The eldest Elder lifted a scroll.

"By the treaty of Hallowmere, the wolf Alpha is held in our keeping until the blood moon, so that the peace may be seen to be kept."

"Kept," Ronan said, and rattled his chains.

A few people laughed behind their sleeves.

I stood up from my bench at the back.

"I claim him," I said.

Every head in the hall turned.

Lucian, on the dais beside Lenora's chair, went stiff.

"Isobel, sit down."

"There's an old right," I said, and my voice carried more easily than I expected. "Older than the Elders' seats. Any child of the Ashmere line may take an enemy under her roof as a guest. Nobody may harm him there, and nobody may keep him chained. It has not been used for four hundred years, and it has not been repealed."

The three Elders looked at one another.

Hester Quill, standing by the archive door, opened a heavy book without being asked and turned it toward them.
