Chapter 16: Counted Out
At one o'clock the hallway outside my old apartment held two plainclothes detectives, a uniformed officer and the building manager with a ring of keys.
Orin stood beside me with his hands in his jacket.
Across the hall, a neighbor in curlers had her door open an inch.
"Ms. Keane," the lead detective said. "You are on the lease. You can authorize entry."
"Authorized," I said.
The manager turned a key and the keypad above the lock blinked red, then green.
Music was playing inside. It was my playlist, the one I had made for cleaning on Sundays.
The detective knocked once, hard. "Darius Strathern. Police."
The music cut off.
We walked in on Darius standing in the middle of our living room in socks, with a suitcase open at his feet.
Lyla's pink knit throw lay across my sofa. Her ring light stood in the corner where my bookcase used to be.
On the kitchen counter sat a bottle of champagne with two glasses beside it.
Darius held up both hands, smiling the credit union smile.
"Officers. Good. This is a domestic misunderstanding. My ex-girlfriend is unwell."
"Mr. Strathern," the detective said. "We have a warrant for the account ending zero four one seven."
"That money went back. The bank reversed it."
"After you moved it, with the intent to keep it. And you used your login to do it, after you had been told not to."
"We share that account!"
"Not after what the bank's records show," the detective said. "Your login, a Sunday night, every dollar. And a recording of you on the phone."
Darius's smile slid off his face and kept sliding.
