Chapter 24: Light Off
Veronica's POV
I turned off the first lamp, and Orin did not move.
I turned off the second. The brick walls went from gold to brown.
By the sixth lamp, the loft was a cave with the city glowing faintly in the window.
"Veronica," he said, behind me.
"Don't talk. Just stay there."
I turned off the last one.
The dark came down, soft and total. My heart began to race, and I stood in it with my hand flat on the cool wall.
His breathing was the only thing in the room.
It was steady and slow, six feet away. I counted it, one, two, three, and it did not feel like counting at all.
"I'm here," he said. "I'm not going to touch you until you say."
"Come here."
His footsteps crossed the boards. The warmth of him reached me before his hands did.
He found my face and held it, his thumbs under my cheekbones.
"I can feel your heart racing," he said quietly.
"It's not the dark."
I kissed him.
In the dark it was different. I couldn't see him, so I felt all of it: the roughness of his jaw, the heat of his mouth, the tremor in the fingers that slid down my neck.
I pulled his shirt up over his head by feel.
He undressed me slowly, the gray hoodie first, then the button of my jeans, and I pulled him closer with my hands in his hair.
My jeans fell to the floor. His palms ran down my back and over my hips, and I shivered, not from fear.
"You're so warm," I whispered.
"You're everywhere." His mouth found my throat. "I can't see any of you, and I can feel all of you."
He lifted me and carried me through the dark to the bed. He knew every board.
He laid me down and his weight came over me, solid and sure.
I felt the whole length of him against my skin, the hard heat of his cock against my thigh, and I arched under it.
"Tell me what you want," he said against my ear.
