Chapter 8: Conference Room

At 8:55 on Monday morning I called my employer's human resources office from the passenger seat of Orin's truck.

The woman on the line used the careful voice people use on strangers who have gone viral.

"Ms. Keane, we're placing you on paid leave while we review the post. It isn't a judgment."

"I'd like to send you something before you decide. It's footage from the room where the clip was taken."

"We'll look at anything you send."

I sent the lobby file and the Yard audio. Then I hung up and looked at the credit union across the street.

"Do you want me to come in?" Orin asked.

"No. This one is mine."

"Then I'll be right here, with the engine running and no opinions."

"You have opinions."

"I have forty-one of them," he said. "I'm keeping them in the glove box."

I almost laughed. I crossed the street with the bandages off my palms and my phone in my fist.

The branch was bright and quiet, with a plant on the counter and a teller who smiled at me out of habit.

"Darius Strathern," I said. "He's in a meeting? I know which room."

The teller started to say something. I was already walking.

Darius's meeting was in the glass conference room by the vault, the one with the long table and the screen on the wall.

He sat at the head in his best blue shirt. Across from him sat a young couple holding hands, and beside him the branch manager, a heavyset man with silver glasses.

They were looking at a mortgage estimate.
