Chapter 11: The Meeting
The review room on the fourth floor had a long oak table and five people sitting behind it.
I sat across from them with a folder, a glass of water, and a phone I had charged to a hundred percent.
Lorcan sat at the end of the table in his white coat.
He had not looked at me once since I came in.
I had not looked at him either.
Dillon and Bree had arrived ten minutes early.
They sat in the family chairs by the window, Bree in a navy dress with a small gold cross, Dillon in a shirt his mother had clearly ironed.
Bree gave me a brave, loving smile, and I gave her nothing.
The board chair cleared his throat.
"Ms. Merrow, thank you for coming. This is a routine review. A concern was raised about your capacity to consent to major surgery. We'd like to hear from you, and then from the person who raised it."
"Ask me anything," I said.
He did.
He asked me what a mitral valve was.
He asked what the surgery would involve, and what the risks were, and what I would do if I woke up and could not move my left hand.
I answered every question plainly, because I had read every pamphlet twice and had been up at three in the morning with the rest.
When I finished, the chair nodded.
"That's very clear. Thank you."
"May I speak now?" Bree said.
She stood without waiting.
She spoke for six minutes.
She was very good.
She said she had known me since we were fifteen.
She said I was a loving, generous person who had been through unimaginable loss, and that the last two weeks had been a breakdown.
She said I had made accusations about my own boyfriend that I would not remember making.
