Chapter 23: Maintenance

Dillon's mother lived in a narrow brick house with a row of tulips along the front walk.

We went there on Sunday night, Lorcan and I and Biscuit, and she let us in without a word.

The kitchen smelled of onions.

Dillon sat at the table with a packed duffel bag at his feet.

He stood when he saw me, and sat again when I didn't tell him to stay.

"I'm taking the plea tomorrow," he said. "I'm not asking you to say it's okay."

"What plea?"

"The detective called Friday. The dealership filed. If I say I planned it all myself, alone, and I give the money back, the D.A. will go easy." He looked at his mother. "Bree says it's the best I can hope for."

"Bree says," his mother repeated, without any expression.

"She's been with me through all of it, Ma."

"She has."

I set Bree's second phone on the table between the salt and the bread.

"I want you to read something," I said. "Then I'll tell you what I want."

He picked it up with two fingers.

The note was already open. A heart for a title, and MAINTENANCE.

He read it slowly. I watched his eyes go down the list and stop at his own name.

Monday, detective's office. G. takes the plea. I'm the friend who paid it back.

"That's not," he said.

"It's in her note."

"That's not what she meant."

"What did she mean, Dillon?"

He put the phone down very gently.

"The two women are the girls," he said. "Tampa and Ohio."

"Yes."

"And then me. On the same list." His voice went thin. "She said I was different. She said I was the only one who knew her. She said, Dillon, you're the only person who gets me."
