Chapter 29: The Right Amount

Courtroom Four had wooden benches and a clock that ran four minutes slow.

I sat in the second row on a Tuesday afternoon, five and a half weeks after my surgery, with Biscuit's leash looped around my wrist.

He wasn't supposed to be there.

The bailiff had looked at the SUPERVISOR bandanna, looked at me, and decided he hadn't seen anything.

Lorcan sat on my left.

On my right sat the Tampa woman, and past her the Ohio woman, who had driven down again on her own gas money.

Toby was behind us in his clean shirt.

In the front row on the other side sat Dillon's mother and his sister, who had not spoken to each other, and who both stood up when he was brought in.

He wore a gray suit that was too big in the shoulders.

He had lost weight.

He did not look at me until the judge asked how he pleaded.

"Guilty," Dillon said.

"To theft by deception, in the amount of forty-eight thousand, eight hundred and eighty-eight dollars?"

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Do you understand what you are admitting?"

"I understand." His voice was quiet but it carried. "I took her phone out of her hand while she was asleep. I put it in my pocket and moved her mother's money while she breathed next to me. I did it because I owed a man, and because I was told it would be fine."

The judge looked over her glasses.

"Told by whom?"

"By a person I trusted more than I should have." He swallowed. "But I did the typing. It was my thumbs."
