Chapter 16: Thirty-Nine

Zia's POV

On Friday the auction clerk handed me a pink slip and would not meet my eyes.

I was at my scale at five, with the clipboard and the first tote at my feet, and the whole floor stood very quiet around me.

"What is this?" I said.

"It's from the pier office," the clerk said. "The board voted last night."

"The board of what?"

"Weigh-ins." He swallowed. "From now on the boats weigh at the plant. In Fairhaven. At the Cabral dock. Your scale's been struck off the auction."

I read the slip twice.

It was signed in a courteous round hand, with the plant manager's name typed under it.

The reason it gave was *consolidation of weighing for efficiency*, and nothing more.

"The pier's been weighing for a hundred years," I said.

"Yes."

"And you took a vote on a Thursday with nobody there?"

"I wasn't there," the clerk said. "Please don't look at me like that."

I put the slip in my apron.

I picked up the next tote and weighed it, and wrote down forty-one pounds in a hand that did not shake.

Then I took off my gloves and walked out of the shed in front of every man in it.

The old man at the ice machine said, "Zia," and I did not stop.

I knew what it was.
