Chapter 22: The Bath
He stood in the middle of my front room with the snow melting on his shoulders and did not take his coat off.
I shut the street door and leaned on it.
"You can take that off," I said.
"I'm waiting to be told," Duarte said.
"You're being stupid," I said, and heard how it came out: fond, and a little breathless.
He took it off.
He hung it on my father's nail beside the boots and stood in his shirtsleeves with his hands at his sides.
The flat was warm.
The radiator knocked, and I had left a lamp on in the bedroom, and the window glowed with the snow behind it.
I was tired to the bone, and I wanted him so badly my knees hummed.
"I've something I want," I said.
"Say it."
"A bath."
He blinked.
"A real one," I said. "I have a tub the size of a feed trough that takes forty minutes to fill, and I haven't had a bath since September."
I pushed off the door.
"I want you to run it."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said, solemn as a priest, "Yes, Zia."
I laughed.
He went into the bathroom, and I heard the taps and the old pipes groaning in the wall.
I stood in the doorway with my arms folded and watched the head Alpha of the Night Tide kneel on my tiled floor in his good trousers and test the water with his scarred hand.
"Hotter," I said.
He turned it up.
"Not that hot."
He turned it down, patient, and said nothing.
When the tub was half full, I came in and shut the door behind me.
The little room was thick with steam, and the single bulb made a halo on the mirror.
"Get in," I said.
"With you?" he said.
"In front. I'll sit behind you."
He undressed, and so did I, and we stood a moment naked in the fog with our eyes on each other.
