Zia's POV
Graça Cabral lives in a three-decker on Rockdale Avenue with a porch full of dead geraniums and a dining table that seats twenty.
The Harvest dinner is the one night a year the Night Tide pack eats together.
I had been to it for two years as Tomás's girl, and I had always sat at the far end with the Furtados and the cousins.
This Saturday a place card with my name on it stood at the head of the table, at the right hand of the Alpha's chair.
I looked at it for a long moment in my good black dress and my mother's pearl studs.
Term three said I sit at no Alpha table until I choose.
I picked up the card and carried it down to the cousins' end and set it beside the bread.
A hush went along the table.
Then somebody began to clap, very quietly, and it was my mother.
She had come with me in her church coat.
"Sit," she said. "Eat."
I sat, and I ate everything.
