Chapter 21: Dropped Live
The head of Meridian Records walked up the side steps and onto the stage, and nobody stopped him.
He took the microphone from Brandon's hand.
"My name is on that video," he said. "I was the third man at the table."
The studio audience did not make a sound.
"Seven years ago I picked a decent man for her to hide behind," he said. "He never asked for any of it, and tonight I am paying for that."
He turned to Lena.
"Meridian Records is ending your contract tonight, Ms. Montague. Under the morals clause, effective now."
"You can't," Lena said.
"I can. I have counsel in the second row, and she just nodded."
A woman in the second row, in a gray suit, lifted her hand.
"I'll be resigning in the morning," the head said, and set down the microphone. "I would like to say I'm sorry, Mr. Burdick, but I think the word has been worn out for the week."
"Keep it," I said.
He nodded once, and walked off.
In the wings, the director began calling out numbers in a flat voice.
"Title sponsor, gone. Second sponsor, gone. Streaming partner is asking if we want to pull the feed."
"Don't you dare," Maura said, in my ear, from the booth. "Leave it up."
The host stood, put her script on the sofa and straightened her pink jacket.
"I don't read for liars," she said to the camera, and walked off her own show.
A chair scraped in the second row.
An older woman in a pearl-gray coat stood up with her purse on her arm.
She had Lena's blue eyes.
"Mom?" Lena said.
