Chapter 19: The Old Lady of the North

The old Lady of the North March kept her hall two days into the hills.

She kept me waiting in it until supper.

When she finally came in, she came in on two sticks, with a hound on each side of her.

She was seventy, tall even bent over, with white hair cropped short as a man's.

She sat down at the head of her own table and looked at me down the length of it.

"So you're his," she said.

"So I'm told, my lady."

"You've got his chin," she said. "Long. He used it to look down at people taller than him."

Erwan stood behind my chair.

Her eyes went to him and stayed a moment.

"And that's a Prigent," she said. "I'd know the shoulders. The sergeant carried me out of a bog once."

"My father," Erwan said.

"I know who he was, boy. I was at the hanging."

She ate for a while without talking.

"Your father cheated at dice," she said finally. "Badly. He always paid when he was caught."

"I liked him," she said. "It doesn't matter. He's twenty-four years dead, and I've got a border."
