Chapter 29: The Prince on Trial

The council sat at midnight by torchlight, with the windows black and the king dying three floors above.

Tanguy was in the king's chair at the head of the table.

He'd dressed for it in white and gold.

I sat at the foot in my father's chair.

The steward had come in ahead of me and said it to the room.

"The Warden of the Marches."

Four of the eight lords had looked at their hands when he said it.

Erwan stood behind my chair.

Katell sat on a bench by the wall with the River Lord beside her.

She looked as if she'd been told to make sure he didn't fall off it.

The old head clerk sat beside them with the red book on his knees.

"One business," Tanguy said, and smiled at the table. "The heir. I'm sure the Warden won't keep us."

"The Warden lays a charge first," I said.

Tanguy's smile stayed. "The heir comes first. I've called the council for it."

The chancellor cleared his throat at Tanguy's right hand.

"Highness," he said, "a charge laid before the council against any man is heard before the council confirms him in anything."
