Chapter 8: No Ship
Thalia's POV
I knew by Wednesday that Laz was lying to me.
It was not a large lie.
It was the sort a man tells when he is carrying something heavy and has decided you must not be asked to hold it.
I could see it in how he stopped in doorways.
I could see it in how he looked at my mother's icon on the dresser in the brass bed's room, and looked away.
I did not ask.
I had learned to say less.
Instead I did something that took less courage than asking and more than listening, which was to go home.
I went on my lunch hour, alone, in my own car.
The Kallias house was dark and smelled of dust.
The lock on the Dimitriou place next door was still bright.
Someone had left a gray sedan in front of it, parked a little too neatly.
I did not look at the sedan.
I went inside and stood in the kitchen and listened to the refrigerator hum.
Then I went into Nikos's room and opened the drawers I had not opened the first time.
There was a gym bag under the bed, empty.
