Chapter 1: Blade at the Throat

Elara holds Sorin at knifepoint in his study at sunset, but he recognizes the crescent mark on her wrist, heals the wound she cut across his palm with blood-command, and keeps hold of her wrist while telling her she was never sent to kill him and offering her one night to decide if she wants the truth before the door locks behind her.

The blade was already at his throat. Elara had crossed the study in the last gold of the hour, through the tall windows that faced the hills, and she had him against the chair before the dust in the air had finished settling. The edge sat flush under his jaw. One breath from opening the vein. Her hand did not shake. It never did.

Twelve years of service had put her here.

Sorin Drache turned his head. Not away from the blade. Into it. The steel dimpled the skin of his throat, and he looked at her wrist as if he had been waiting to see it all along.

The crescent mark sat just above the leather of her cuff, pale against her skin. She had not realized the sleeve had ridden up.

'There it is,' he said.

His voice was low. Measured. The kind of voice that did not need to rise because the room had already gone quiet for it.

'You are not here to kill me,' he said. 'You never were.'

Elara pressed the blade a fraction closer. A bead of blood welled under the edge and ran down his throat into the high collar of his coat.

He did not flinch.

'You came through the east window,' he said. 'You crossed the hall without tripping the wards. You found me in the one room of this court where the light would be in your favor. That is not the work of a woman sent to kill me. That is the work of a woman sent to be seen.'

'You talk a lot for a dead man,' Elara said.

Her voice came out flat. Good. That was how she wanted it.

'And you lie very well for a woman who is not sure what she is.'

He moved. Elara saw the blur and her body was already twisting, already pulling the blade back for the killing stroke, but his hand closed around her wrist first. Not hard. Not fast. Simply there, as if it had always been there and she had only now noticed.

She could not pull free.

With his other hand he reached up and pressed two fingers to the slash she had opened across his palm when he caught the blade. She had not even felt the cut land.

The wound was there. A clean line across the pale skin. Then it was not.

The blood on his palm stopped. It hung in the air for half a breath, dark and shining, and then it flowed backward into the cut. The skin closed in a ripple of dark red luminescence that traveled up his arm like a lit fuse, under the cuff of his sleeve, gone.

Elara stopped breathing.

She had read about blood-command. She had trained against it. She had never seen it.

'You see,' Sorin said. 'I have been waiting for you, little hunter. I have been waiting a very long time.'

His thumb moved over the crescent mark on her wrist. Back and forth. The touch was light, almost tender, and it made something in her chest go very still.

He knew what it was. He had read it without hesitation, in the half-second before she had even registered the sleeve had moved.

That was not the reaction of a man seeing a hunter's mark. That was the reaction of a man checking a face against a portrait he had memorized.

He had been watching. He had known she was coming. And he had let her get this close.

Elara did not argue. She did not pull back. She let him hold her wrist and she filed the fact away, cold and clean, while the last of the sunset bled out of the room and left them both in violet dusk.

He recognized it instantly. He was not surprised. That meant the order had not sent her to kill him. It meant they had sent her to be recognized.

Fenn had told her this was a standard execution. Twelve years of service, and he had sent her here with a mark she had been told was nothing. A birthmark. A scar from training.

He had sent her to be read.

Something hot and cold moved through her at the same time. She did not let it reach her face.

'What do you want?' she asked.

Sorin smiled. It was a small thing, and it did not reach his eyes.

'I want you to understand what you are,' he said. 'And I want you to understand what they have done to you. After that, I want you to choose.'

'Choose what?'

'Whether you still want to kill me.'

He released her wrist. Elara did not step back. She could have. The blade was still in her hand. The door was ten feet away. But she did not move.

Because he had not been surprised. Because the mark on her wrist meant something to him, and she did not know what, and she had spent twelve years being told she was a weapon and nothing else, and now this vampire lord was looking at her like she was the key to a door he had been standing in front of for centuries.

She was not going to kill him. Not tonight.

She was going to stay, and she was going to learn every secret this court held about her bloodline and what the order had withheld from her, and when she walked out of here, she would walk out with enough truth to burn Fenn to the ground on her own terms.

Not because Sorin asked her to. Because she had decided.

'One night,' Sorin said. 'I will give you one night to decide whether you want to know the truth about why the order sent you here. After that, the choice is made, and there is no going back.'

He stepped past her, close enough that the edge of his coat brushed her arm. She caught the smell of him. Cold stone. Night-blooming flowers. Something underneath that was just blood and heat and age.

'Your room is prepared,' he said. 'The one at the top of the east stair. You will find it more comfortable than the cells.'

'And if I decide I do not want the truth?'

'Then you will still not leave,' Sorin said, and he did not turn around. 'That is not a choice I offer.'

The door closed behind him.

Elara stood in the darkening room with the blade still in her hand, and she listened to the lock turn.

The sound was soft. Final. It came again, a second click, and then a third, and each one landed in her chest like a heartbeat.
