Chapter 11: Two in the Morning

Emmett came back up the stairs two at a time, and I was already dressed.

He told me in five sentences.

I didn't say a word on the drive to Findlay, and neither did Keaton in the back seat.

It was a quarter to two when we came through the front doors of Maple Court.

The lobby lights were on low. A night nurse stood behind the desk with her hand over her mouth.

In the middle of the floor was a wheelchair, and June sat in it in her good wool coat, with her braid pinned up under a hat.

Sienna stood behind the chair with both hands on the grips.

"Keaton," she said, bright and shaky. "Oh, thank God. I got your mother up."

"Put her down," Keaton said.

"I'm taking her to a better place. They were going to put her in a state home, Keaton. I couldn't let them."

"Who told you that?"

"Your lawyer," Sienna said. "He said the care was unpaid, and that Tess would use it, so I thought," she stopped, "I thought if I got her signature on a paper saying she wasn't well enough to remember, then none of the old documents mattered."

The night nurse made a small sound.

Sienna didn't see her. She was looking at me.

"You were going to lose, Tess," she said. "Everyone in that atrium clapped for you, and he looked at me like I'd killed someone. I only wanted one thing to be mine. I wanted a thing I did to turn out right."
