Chapter 6: Who Is Caleb

I sent Harrison one text from the hospital parking lot: Who is Caleb?

I watched the three dots appear and vanish four times.

At last he wrote: A client's son. He's sick. I'm sorry I left. Is the baby okay?

It was a smooth, fast answer, and he had taken four tries to write it.

I put the phone face down on the passenger seat and drove to Beacon Hill instead of home.

Harriet received me in her sunroom at two in the afternoon.

She was wrapped in a gray shawl, and her left hand lay on the chair arm without moving.

It was one of her slow days.

"You came alone," she said, and each word had to be worked out of her. "Good."

"I came to ask you something."

"First, sit. Eat."

A silver tray held tea and three small sandwiches, and she watched me until I took one.

"I have a proposal," she said.

"I thought you might."

"You stay married. You stay in the house on Chestnut Street, in your own rooms. You have your baby here, under my care." She paused to find the next words. "And I will see that Celia Huntington is gone from Boston by spring."

"Gone how?"

"I have done it before."

She said it flatly.

I set down my teacup.

"You've done it before," I repeated. "When?"

Her mouth worked, and her good hand tightened on the shawl.

"Five years ago, I managed a problem. It was a good arrangement. It lasted until it didn't."
