Chapter 21: The Third Ledger
Jesse's POV
Hattie did not ask me in the Grange parking lot.
She stood with her back against my truck door and her arms wrapped around herself.
She still wore the green dress, and the light from the hall lay across her face.
"Where has Dean been?" she said.
"Hat."
"You said it wasn't yours to tell. That was when I thought it was a debt."
"It isn't mine to tell. It's his."
"Lottie knows it."
"Lottie's known it for years, and she's held it over him the whole time."
She was quiet for a long moment.
"He's two weeks out," she said at last. "He told me he'd say it to my face."
"He will."
"Then I'll wait for him. But I'm not waiting for anything else, Jesse. If another thing comes out of Lottie's mouth that you could've told me, we're done."
"I understand."
"Do you?"
"I stopped hiding the day you read the ledger. I just hadn't told you that yet."
She almost smiled.
She let me drive her home, and she went in, and I sat in the truck at her gate with my forehead on the wheel.
Then I drove to my mother's.
My mother's house sits behind the big barn on the Tillman ranch, and the kitchen light was on at eleven.
She was at the table in her robe with a cup of tea, reading a seed catalogue.
She didn't look up.
"I heard it from three women before the dinner was over," she said. "Sit down."
I sat.
"Ma, I've got to tell you all of it."
"Then tell me."
I told her.
Dean, and the night after the funeral, and the promise.
